Sound Off - Britney Spears: Circus

The latest albums making noise

Britney Spears’ latest attempt at reviving her career comes in the form of Circus, a set poised to debut atop the Billboard 200 chart. Her last effort, Blackout, was her only disc that failed to achieve the feat, but Circus proves it’s deserving of the honor.

Lead by “Womanizer” (Spears’ first No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 since “… Baby One More Time” in 1999), the set delves into the pure pop fans expect from Britney. Following the first single is the album’s title track. Here, Spears’ proclaims, “There's only two types of people in the world/The ones that entertain and the ones that observe.” Where does she fall? Not surprisingly, she reveals that she’s a “put on a show kind of girl.”

“Out from Under,” which is already getting some airplay on pop radio, is a ballad similar to slow-song endeavors such as “Someday I Will Understand” and “Born To Make You Happy,” though the former’s influence is more prevalent on the maternal lyrics of “My Baby.”

The hypnotic melody of “Blur” is somewhat reminiscent of some of the tracks from 2003’s In the Zone, as is that of “Unusual You,” though the latter is an already upbeat, dance floor-ready cut that DJs are likely ready to begin experimenting with.

Though there are some questionable inclusions on this compilation (“If U Seek Amy,” “Mmm Papi” and Blackout’s unchanged “Radar”), the overall collection of material is entertaining and unapologetically pop. It’s the kind of music that made Spears famous and that fans demand from this and future releases.
