Sound Off - Britney Spears: Break the Ice Remixes

The latest albums making noise

Heading to the clubs this weekend? Chances are one of the new remixes of Britney Spears' latest single, “Break the Ice,” will at some point come across the speakers. The new 11-track vinyl was released on Tuesday ― though digital downloads have been available for weeks ― and contains remixes from such notables as Kaskade, Jason Nevins, Tracy Young and Doug Grayson.

The Kaskade remix doesn’t stray too far from the album version of the single, with only a multi-layered beat and a few club song “peaks and valleys” to differentiate it from the original, though this version feels noticeably darker. Jason Nevins adds a happier vibe with his break beats-friendly radio edit and a rock remix that could blend easily with any Avril Lavigne song. The Tonal remix takes Spears into the territory of tribal beats and house, and is definitely the most circuit club-friendly of the remixes presented here. Mike Rizzo’s Funk Generation Radio Edit is ready for dance radio, blending house, break beats and techno in a way that nearly removes any individual trace of each genre’s personality. Tracy Young dips into circuit territory, though the melody of the remix could easily follow Young’s interpretation of Christina Aguilera’s “Dirrty” without missing a beat. Finally, Doug Grayson infuses some old-school synthesizers and a heavier bass line to punctuate Spears’ breathier deliveries.

While initially fun, none of the remixes in this collection are particularly memorable, unlike such Spears’ classics as Thunderpuss’ remix of “I’m A Slave 4 U.” And, if zoning out, it’s difficult to tell some of them apart.
